A common trend of many software developers releasing new programs is to also create a mobile app. Afterall, the number of users with smartphones is rising and demand for mobile versions of popular apps is at an all-time high. Google Drive is no different, and while it's not as functional as the browser version, it is catching up. Google has recently released an update to the mobile version of Drive that makes it even more functional.
The latest update to the Drive app for Android devices aims to make accessing your files and creating documents from your mobile device even easier, and Google delivers on that goal. Here is an overview of the changes introduced by Google.
An improved layout When you open the new version of Drive on your Android device you likely won't see much of a difference to the overall look. If you look at the top of the screen however you will notice that the top bar has been changed. You will now see (from left to right) :
- Three vertical lines - Tapping these will bring up the side-bar with your different files including: My Drive, Starred, Recent, Offline, etc. If you use more than one account, you will see your account name at the top of the menu. Tapping on it will allow you to select the different Google accounts you have linked with your device. You can also get this menu up by placing your finger on the left side of the screen and swiping to the right.
- The Drive icon - This part of the bar shows the file path. For example, if you have a folder on your Drive labeled 'Bills', and open it on your device you will see its name beside the Drive icon at the top. Tapping on the Drive icon will take you back to the home screen and if you have more than two folders open you will be able to select which folder to go back to.
- A magnifying glass - Tapping this will allow you to search Drive for files.
- Four squares - This is possibly the biggest change to Drive. Tapping these squares will change your files and folders into individual cards. Your folders will appear at the top of the screen and clicking on each will open each one and show the files in that folder as little cards. If you tap on a picture, you will be able to preview every file in that folder.
- Three small vertical squares - Selecting this will open a drop-down menu with options including: Add new, Filter by, Settings and Help.
Download a copy If you want to download a copy of a picture, doc or other file you can now do so. Simply open the file and press the information button on the top of the screen. Press the three squares at the top-right of the window that opens and select Download a copy from the menu that drops down.
Your phone or tablet is now a scanner Google introduced a new feature to the mobile Drive app that enables you to scan documents using your device's camera. You can scan documents by pressing the three squares from any file, (note: This is where it will be uploaded, so pick where you want to upload the file first), select Add new followed by Scan. Your camera should turn on, so press the shutter button and Drive will scan the document and create a .pdf.
Combine this with the app's ability to print documents through the cloud via Google's Cloud Print and this app could be a valuable mobile scanner.

Tech is always changing and evolving; devices seen as futuristic only a few years ago are now mainstream and in everyday use. And one of the more outlandish tech devices of the past year has been Google's augmented reality project Google Glass. This device has had some impressive media coverage, with many wondering how exactly it will work. Now that the first, limited edition has been released, we can finally answer that question...kind of.
There are a wide variety of reasons the smartphone has become an integral part of any business owner's daily life. One of the biggest is that these devices are functional, largely due in part to the multitude of apps available that can help make our lives just a little bit easier. If you have an Android phone, here's one app that could help you while making calls.
One of the biggest attractions of smartphones is the apps. There is an app for almost everything you want to do, with more being introduced on a daily basis. Because of this demand for apps, popular computer programs, like Internet browsers, have mobile versions. Users of Google apps have Chrome, and the Beta version has just been updated with new features that business users may enjoy.
Cell phones are definitely one of the most important inventions of modern times. They have more or less replaced landlines for many, and are an indispensable part of business. While the two main features of the phone - calling and texting - are great, with many systems like Android offering basic call and text management, many users would like more.
Do you have a sweet tooth and like tech devices? Google does. Their mobile platform, Android, has brought a little bit of a sugar rush to many users because of all the sweet applications and devices. While Android isn't as popular as its major competitor - iOS - it is enjoying an increased number of users. The question is: How well is Android holding up? To answer this, you need to take a look at the state of Android.
2011, '12 and '13 are shaping up to be the years of the rectangle. Take a look at almost all the smartphones and tablets released in the past years and all you see is a rectangle with rounded edges. This homogeneity isn't conducive to customization at least on the outside. Sure you can put a case on the thing, but even then many people pick the same styles. So, that leaves the OS and what you do with it. If you have an Android device, there are tons of features and customization abilities.
The world of tablets and smartphones is a fast one. It seems like a new device that pushes the boundaries is introduced each week. When it comes to Android, what devices set the boundaries for others to break? Google's Nexus line. Nexus devices are what Google thinks of as the 'benchmark' Android device; what an Android device should be. On November 13, two brand new Nexus devices were made available for sale.
If you have a smartphone, take a step back and ask yourself: how many phone numbers can you remember? Chances are high you’ll be able to remember the phone numbers you dialed countless times when you were a kid, or before you had a mobile. Now however, most people rely on their phone to store their numbers rather than memorizing them. What happens if your phone dies though?
One of the main reasons people choose an Android smartphone is because of the openness of the system. Don’t like the layout your phone uses? Change it, Google isn’t going to stop you. One of the most common things people change on their device is what keyboard they’re using. There’s a number of options available, the problem being which is best.
